Mr Nursaw said that, when the Director of the Secretariat's Legal Division returns from leave, he would hope to give Mr Pope lunch, along with representatives from one or two other Whitehall Departments. He wished in particular to discover what Mr Pope had in mind under 5(a) (the review of the Secretariat's activities in the legal field). I said that there might well be a (small) number of items, such as the self-regulation of corporate abuses, on which the Secretariat might try to bounce Law Ministers into agreements which more mature reflection would lead them to regret. If we could secure a list of such items from Mr Pope in advance of the CLMM we could provide Ministers with any defensive briefing necessary.
