During Jan. - Sept. 1981 imports were valued at HK$100,859 million, of which about 10 per cent was accounted for by foodstuffs. The largest supplier was Japan ($23,505 million), China ($20,952 million), U.S.A. ($10,816 million), Thailand ($5,609 million), Taiwan ($7,856 million), Singapore ($7,732 million) and United Kingdom ($4,477 million). The principal import items were textiles; petroleum, petroleum products and related materials; electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances; telecom- munications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment; diamonds, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones; iron and steel; vegetables and fruits; general industrial machinery and equipment and machine parts and textile fibres (other than wool tops) and their wastes.
The value of domestic exports was HK$58,089 million, of which 42 per cent was accounted for by garment and textile products. The leading overseas customers were U.S.A. ($20,988 million), U.K. ($5,493 million), Federal Republic of Germany ($5,133 million), Japan ($2,114 million), China ($1,937 million), Australia ($1,878 million), and Canada ($1,705 million). The most important items of domestic manufacture entering the exports trade were articles of apparel and clothing accessories; watches and clocks; plastic toys and dolls; textile fabrics; radio broadcast receivers of all kinds; electronic components and parts for computer; miscellaneous manufactures of metal; travel goods, handbags and similar containers; jewellery and goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares; plastic articles; electric space heating equipment and parts; footwear; sanitary, plumbing, heating and lighting fixtures and fittings; transistors and diodes and plastic artificial flowers.
The value of re-exports totalled HK$30,213 million and the main re-export markets were China ($5,775 million), U.S.A. ($3,445 million), Indonesia ($3,105 million), Singapore ($2,370 million) and Japan ($1,979 million). The principal commodities in the re-export trade were textile yarn, fabrics, made-up articles and related products, photographic apparatus, equipment and supplies, optical goods and watches and clocks; electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances; diamonds, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones; articles of clothing accessories; metalliferous ores and metal scrap and medicinal and pharmaceutical products.
