I am writing in Eric Ho's temporary absence on

At the 33rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, it was decided that a World Assembly on Aging (WAA) should be convened in Vienna from 26th July to 6th August 1982 under the auspices of the United Nations Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs (UNCSDHA). The purpose of the Assembly would be to launch an international action programme aimed at guaranteeing social and economic security for the elderly population. At the invitation of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Hong Kong Government took part in the Regional Inter- governmental Preparatory Meeting for the WAA held in Manila in October 1981.

3.

We are interested in attending the WAA in August, but have made no firm commitment yet, as we have heard nothing from the Organising Committee. We are, however, under some pressure from the voluntary sector here to take an active part.

4.

I should be grateful to know if H.M.G. has received an invitation to attend the WAA and, if so, whether the invitation could be extended to include Hong Kong; or alternatively whether a separate invitation could be arranged for us. We normally expect the latter.
