Dear Robin,
Thank you very much indeed for your consideration in sending me for what must be about the 25th year, the INCO diary. I think I can claim that I have used the INCO diary almost exclusively as a pocket diary ever since I left International Nickel in 1954.
This year there was an additional reason for writing to you direct. Your appointment to the Cabinet Office in London virtually coincided with my appointment as Chief Adviser on Science and Technology to the Hong Kong Government. We met very briefly at the "Vanadium" dinner on Wednesday, the 21st of October at Guildhall. However, there was not sufficient time to do any more than simply exchange a brief greeting; I seemed to be constantly explaining various things about Hong Kong and the new situation to a lot of old friends and, even so, I missed talking to several others who were in fact present.
From time to time I shall be in the U.K. on Government business and, of course, occasionally I fit in visits for leave or private purposes. It would be very useful if we could talk together the next time I am over which is likely to be round about February or March or spring time. I should like to compare notes about the two situations although, of course, Hong Kong Government science and technology is at least one order of magnitude, if not more, smaller than the U.K. Nevertheless, there are very good reasons for believing that the liaison between U.K. science and technology institutions and the embryo forms in Hong Kong should be strengthened.
If this does not happen quickly there is a very good chance that
the Japanese will step in as a vary sharp substitute!
Similarly, if there is anything I can do to help you personally or any close colleagues with arrangements in visiting or passing through Hong Kong please let me know.
Best wishes,
