recast it in the light of our discussions here and circulate
it after the holidays still as a draft. You will see from
the paper and its annexes that we have sought to indicate
where South East Asia currently figures in apparent British
priorities whether in terms of exports, or as Diplomatic
-
Service manpower, or of our expenditure.

I've dealt with the first agenda item. The others
are, I hope self-explanatory. This afternoon we aim to
take a look atASEAN's political prospects and the environ-
ment within which they will flourish or not. Tomorrow
we shall look at our commercial interests and at the tools
we have at our disposal, within the overall economic, social
and cultural framework. And we shall finish with an informal
session with Mr Anand, the chief Thai participant in the
ASEAN Task Force establshed earlier this year by
ASEAN Ministers to look closely at ASEAN's future.
We shall have our work cut out to get through our
agenda in the time available, so I will say no more. But
I know that several of you would welcome some news and/or
guidance on Hong Kong.......
