it after the holidays still as a draft. You will see from

the paper and its annexes that we have sought to indicate

where South East Asia currently figures in apparent British

priorities whether in terms of exports, or as Diplomatic

Service manpower, or of our expenditure.

I've dealt with the first agenda item. The others

are, I hope self-explanatory. This afternoon we aim to

take a look atASEAN's political prospects and the environ-

ment within which they will flourish or not. Tomorrow

we shall look at our commercial interests and at the tools

we have at our disposal, within the overall economic, social

and cultural framework. And we shall finish with an informal

session with Mr Anand, the chief Thai participant in the

ASEAN Task Force establshed earlier this year by

ASEAN Ministers to look closely at ASEAN's future.

We shall have our work cut out to get through our

agenda in the time available, so I will say no more. But

I know that several of you would welcome some news and/or

guidance on Hong Kong.......
