I am sorry not to have replied to your letter of 11 September about the Hong Kong /Macau Work Committee. The only thing I can add is that Iu Ping was present at the talks on Hong Kong with Mrs Thatcher. He was described as an "adviser" to the Western European Dept of the MFA. They told us informally that he was an expert on Hong Kong drafted in for the occasion. I have no doubt that he comes from the Hong Kong/Macau office. I would guess he was in his 50s or perhaps early 60s.
