Dear Nigel,
FALKLANDS: UN VOTE: CHINESE REACTION
Chinese press roaction to the TINGA vote of 4 November hog hoen fairly muted.
^.
The outcome of the vote was reported by NCNA together with the Prime Minister's declaration that Britain was not prepared to enter into negotiations with Argentina, and Bignone's call for a positive reaction from Britain. People's Daily of ? November carried an article originating from Buenos Aires headed "A diplomatic victory for Argentina". It drew attention to the strong Tatin American support which the Argentinian resolution had enjoyed and recorded the various reactions to the American vote in its favour. Tt claimed that many of the countries which had abstained had also expressed support for resumed nerotiations between the two sides. The resolution was described as "reasonable" and Britain, in rejecting it, was said to be Bicnoring intemational society's opposition to colonialism and andent hope for a peaceful solution of international conflicts". Britain, said the article, strove to obstruct the passing of the resolution by the assembly and the British representative tried to "nerguade" or even "pressurise" certain countries. "Opinion
considers that the result of this vote is "a showdown for London"".
ス。
The article ends by saying that the solution of the Malvinas question is no easy thing and that the just struggle of the Argentinian Government and people to protect their national sovereignty will be long and arduous.
❤
This is largely predictable and rather less savage than the Languere used by Huang Hua on 4 October. Other Chinese papers have either confined themselves to the bland NCNA reports or ignored the vote altogether.
Yours ever, John
