The death grant paid to a widow is twice the annual rate
of pension that her husband would have been awarded had he served to the end of a full career; or, if better, three times the annual rate of invaliding pension that could have been awarded to him at the date of his death. (The latter alternative is the more favourable if the husband has served beyond 18 years.) When death is attributable to service, an additional gratuity is paid. Both the death grant and the gratuity are tax free. They are paid as soon as possible after death, normally within two weeks.
6. A table setting out the rates of death grants and widows' and childrens' pensions payable, according to rank, and of the DHSS war pensions payable, is attached.
Temporary continuation of pay
7. In order to help the widow in the period immediately following her husband's death, she continues to receive his full pay for 182 days if she has children and for 91 days if she has none. The Service and DHSS pensions then come into payment.
