benefit to both inhabitants and to China. UK and China focussing on

problem of future. All concerned keen to see prosperity and stability

maintained.

Am visiting China in September. Hong Kong bound to come up,

but wrong to expect rapid developments. Every reason for further

confidence in Hong Kong's continuing prosperity and cooperation with

China.

5.

Interest of the people of Hong Kong would be taken into

account. Our constitutional responsibility to Hong Kong undiminished.
