HMS SHEFFIELD

1.

flos 10/5

At 0135 6 May the MOD (DS.11 Duty Officer, 218-7217) told me that they had now received the casualty list for HMS Sheffield. This is as follows:

2.

1 confirmed dead, 5 presumed dead, 13 RN personnel missing, 1 Hong Kong laundry-man missing, 268 sur- vivors.

The condition of those survivors who are injured is as follows:

1 very seriously ill, 2 seriously ill, ll potentially seriously ill, 7 potentially minor, 3 minor,

3. The MOD told me that they would be informing next-of-kin as soon as possible and would be drafting a press statement for use later today. I pointed out that because of the Hong Kong laundry-man it was essential that the statement should be cleared with the FCO and theMOD have agreed to this.
