British Nationality Act 1981

Purpose

To facilitate movement at exist and proposed crossings, while maintaining security.

To replace the present form of identity card by a a smaller and more secure card complemented by a computerised record system.

To prepare for implementation of the Act.

Progress Made and Present Position

a) Hong Kong-China Joint Working Group on Controls at Entry/Exit Points continues to meet bi-monthly. 84 permits

for cars to cross at Man Kam To have been issued.

b) PAGENT has produced a paper on the future

of Frontier Closed Area in the light of new developments.

c) PWSC has approved expansion of Man Kam To

complex.

Detailed planning has continued. project is on schedule.

a) Consideration of draft Bill to amend Immigration Ordinance deferred on the advice of Executive Council pending resolution of the nomenclature in passports.

b) Consideration of consequential amendments

to other legislation also deferred.
