(vii) The grandchildren of Crown servants, born before 1 January 1983, will not by

virtue of a grandparent's Crown Service either:-

(a) acquire British citizenship; or

(b) if they acquire British citizenship by other means become British citizens

'otherwise than by descent'.

These provisions will apply to other Crown servants, for example members of the Armed Forces, as well as to the Diplomatic Service. British citizens working for European Community institutions will be similarly provided for.

Section 2(3) of the Act gives the Home Secretary the power to make an order designating, to provide the same benefits under section 2(1), any service which he considers to be closely associated with the activities outside the United Kingdom of HM Government in the United Kingdom. The children of staff in such service will benefit from the Act in exactly the same way as the children of Crown servants. An Order has been laid before Parliament to effect the designations of inter alia the following service:-

Governors of dependent territories

Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service

Her Majesty's Overseas Judiciary

Secondment from Crown service to an overseas appointment during the course of a career in Crown service

NAAFI

NATO

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

British Council
