HENDERSON ISLAND: IS AN AMERICAN INTERESTED IN SETTLING THERE?

An American national has expressed an interest in

settling on Henderson Island. The Island Council have

indicated that they are prepared to consider this, subject

to certain conditions. The matter will be studied carefully

and a decision made in due course.

HAS THERE BEEN ANY CHALLENGE TO BRITISH SOVEREIGNTY OVER PITCAIRN?

No.

HMG's sovereignty has never been in doubt.

DEFENCE

There is no known threat to Pitcairn,

ISLANDERS' WISHES: DO THEY WANT INDEPENDENCE?

The Island Council has declared that it has no wish

to seek to change the nature of the relationship between

Pitcairn and the Government of the United Kingdom.

However,

should the Islanders ever express a desire to change their

status, HMG would be prepared to take

appropriate

measures to respect the wishes of the Islanders.

ISLAND COUNCIL

The Islanders run their internal affairs through the

Island Council, which is nearly all directly or indirectly

elected.

18. WHAT AID DOES HMG GIVE TO PITCAIRN?

Aid is granted to Pitcairn where the need arises. For

instance, ODA paid £47,000 towards the construction of the

jetty in 1977 and they have agreed to meet the costs of

Major Jasonsmith's visit.
