18. That is a question you should put to the Chinese Government.

It was at the instigation of the People's Republic of China

that Hong Kong was removed from the list of non-self-governing

countries.

WHAT ABOUT HONG KONG'S FUTURE?

19. The Chinese agreed during my right honourable Friend

the Prime Minister's visit to Peking in September that talks

would be held on the future of Hong Kong with the common aim

of maintaining Hong Kong's stability and prosperity.

Meetings to follow up my right honourable Friend the Prime

Minister's visit have begun. Their content must remain

confidential.

WHAT ABOUT THE WISHES/INTERESTS OF THE HONG KONG PEOPLE?

20.

Her Majesty's Governmentĺ aim, through discussion with

the Chinese Government, to agree on arrangements for the future

which will be acceptable to the British Parliament and to the

inhabitants of Hong Kong. The latter's views will be fully

taken into account in the talks.
