POLITICAL BACKGROUND BRIEF

1.

This brief is intended to provide guidance on most of the political subjects which could cause difficulties for UK delegates at technical meetings or conferences. It is intended chiefly for the use of officials from other Whitehall Departments but is also fairly widely read in the FCO and Embassies abroad.

2. The last edition of the brief was published in August 1981 and we now intend to issue a revised edition by about mid April. I would be grateful if you would review the attached section (s) which you contributed to the 1981 brief. Where no revisions are necessary, I should be grateful for a nil return. Revisions may either be in the form of manuscript amendments to the old brief or in final form (plain white A4 paper, typed on one side only, plus one copy).

I would be grateful for returns by 13 April at the latest.
