Sir,
1. I am directed by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to inform you that Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to approve your appointment as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of St Helena in succession to Mr G C Guy CMG CVO OBE. Your appointment will be for a period of 3 years with effect from the date of your assumption of office subject to signification of The Queen's pleasure that it be terminated earlier.
2:
During the appointment you will continue to receive your Diplomatic Service salary and to be subject to the general terms and conditions prescribed for Diplomatic Service appointments by Diplomatic Service Regulations as amended from time to time. Arrangements will be made for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to pay into your United Kingdom bank account all the Allowances for which you are eligible. The transfer of funds to St Helena would, however, be your personal responsibility.

4. I enclose, for your information, a copy of 'Notes for the Guidance of Persons Appointed as Governors' as well as a copy of 'Notes on Procedure for Governors General and Governors of Dependent Territories'. May I point out that these pamphlets are intended for guidance and information only and are not to be regarded as official instructions.
5. Your commission will be forwarded to you before your departure to St Helena.
