voters, at present the majority, themselves still prefer. On

the other hand, BVI politicians sometimes behave in a way which

hardly suggests friendship toward London. Their blood pressure,

especially that of Stoutt and the Social Services Minister,

O'Neal, rises at the slightest trammel from Whitehall. For

myself, as I chair the BVI Executive Council, I have found

patience and yet more patience the only formula for stability;

London suggesting a world peopled only by prudent bureaucrats,

rational politicians and responsible voters. Of course the real

world is not like this at all. It has more interest; and I

the Diplomatic Service. And, come to think of it, this interest

is really what we joined for. Not being fanciful: I really am

most grateful for the privilege of my years of service.'
