MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES AND GOVERNORS OFFICES IN DEPENDENT TERRITORIES

Thank you for your further letter of 8 March explaining in more detail the circumstances in the British Virgin Islands, Falkland Islands and Montserrat.

I note that governors emoluments in these territories are "topped up" so that they do not suffer by comparison with their Diplomatic Service colleagues. Also that a grant to the local territory for this particular purpose might undermine the position of the local territory and the extent to which they currently meet their responsibilities.

Provided therefore that the additional cost initially £28,000 - of upgrading the furnishings and maintenance to the normal Diplomatic Service Standards continues to be made from the provision made in Subhead C5 and from within the existing PES provision we are content that you should proceed.
