whether, particularly in view of the current manpower problems, any of the Post's activities in your field, or any types of reporting, could be dispensed with.

3. I should be grateful if each brief could be headed:

BRIEF FOR THE INSPECTION OF [NAME OF POST] BY [NAME OF DEPARTMENT]

Please keep the briefs short. Background should be the minimum needed to explain any points you want the Inspector to look into. It is useful for future reference if the brief could be date and could also bear the name of the originator.

Departments receiving Self-Inspection Questionnaires from Posts should attach these behind their briefs and indicate in the latter any points which they wish to draw to the Inspectors' attention. In this connection please bear in mind that Posts have been requested to submit their completed SIQS to Departments by 15 October. It creates difficulties, particularly at smaller Posts, if requests are received from Departments for earlier submission of SIQS.

5. The Inspectors will be available for oral briefing between 48 January. I realise that this period is very short, but we are constricted by the New Year holiday on the one hand and the Inspectors' overseas schedule on the other. If Departments wished to arrange with individual Inspectors for briefing before 4 January that would be perfectly acceptable, but I should prefer to leave this as a matter between Departments and the individual Inspector.

If, for any of the countries mentioned in paragraph 1 above, you have nothing to bring to the Inspectors' notice, would you please write "No brief for [country/countries]" on this minute and return it to the Inspectorate Registry (CG 709).
