DS 5, head of unit visits to Guangdong

and Fujian, liaison with the Guangdong

and Fujian representative offices, contact

with the China National Trust and Investment

Corporation, contact with British-run banks

and trading houses in Hong Kong and contact

with local representatives of UK manufacturers

and suppliers.

DS 5 (also Vice Consul in Macau) visits to

Guangxi, liaison with Guangxi, Peking, Tianjin and Shanghai representative offices, liaison with the more traditional Chinese representative organisations such as China Resources and the

Bank of China and their affiliates, and contact with local left-wing newspapers and journals.

DS 7 visits to Yunnan, monitoring of exhibitions in Canton, monitoring of Chinese plans for South China Sea oil development, and liaison with a large number of small Hong

Kong Chinese trading companies involved in the China trade.
