Dear Mr Wolfson
Thank you for your letter of 30th November regarding Mr Christopher Dawson's views on an article in the Birmingham Evening Mail on corruption in Hong Kong.
As you know from Mr Dawson's correspondence with me, I was in touch with him in the middle of November and passed on his comments to the Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption in Hong Kong. As a result the ICAC Commissioner sent a letter to the Evening Mail through our office on 20th November. Before the despatch of this letter to Birmingham, I had the letter read over the telephone to Mr Dawson and he indicated that he was completely satisfied.
A copy of the ICAC Commissioner's letter is attached for your reference and transmission to Mr Dawson as desired.
Unfortunately the Evening Mail wrote us about 10 days ago to say that they did not think it necessary to publish the letter from the ICAC. I have since written personally to the Editor to seek reconsideration of this decision and to ask that the ICAC Commissioner's letter be published, to put the article in context.
I am now waiting to hear from the Editor. But, meanwhile, I can only hope that he changes his mind about publishing the ICAC letter. When that happens, I shall let Mr Dawson know and send him a clipping.
