1. Your files will show that in 1977-1978 there was of correspondence between this Department and Hong Kong about Christopher Clements, who was convicted of murder in December 1977. It rests with Brian Clancy's letter to us of 16 January 1978 about the trial.

We were involved in Clement's case by the interest shown by his MP, Mr Keith Stainton. Mr Stainton has now written enclosing a copy of a letter from Clement's father quoting an alleged report of remission of sentence for the Royal Wedding. I attach copies of these letters and of Mr Ridley's reply for your information. I do not think that any action is called for on your part, but you may wish to bear in mind Mr Stainton's point about 'utmost flexibility' over parental visits. The Clements have a long way to go to see their son. I am sure that the prison authorities will take this into account and show consideration in exercising their discretion over visits.
