Wood investigated an unusual case with four suicidal gunshot Doctor Johnson wounds in the head: When an elderly recluse was not seen up and about in his apartment for a few days, his neighbours summoned police to investigate. On breaking open his apart- ment door, he was found lying on the bed. An old 0.32 calibre revolver was found on his body with very old ammunition. There were four gunshot wounds on the head. Two penetrated the scalp, one penetrated the skull and one entered the cranium. He had suffered from severe arthritis and in a suicide note that he had left he cited poor health as the reason for taking his own life.
Mason and his associates have documented details of a case in which a 74-year-old man committed suicide by shooting himself four times in the head and once in the chest.

Gonzales and his colleagues have reported two cases with multiple suicidal gunshot wounds. (1) The victim inflicted three closely placed contact gunshot wounds in the region of the left upper quadrant of the abdomen and one contact wound in the right temple region. A 0.32 calibre revolver was used. Three bullets were recovered from the left posterior chest wall. The gunshot wound of the head was considered to be fatal. (2) The victim shot himself five times in the right temple region. All bullets perforated the skull but none injured the brain; nevertheless, he died from sepsis several days after the shooting.
In a case reported in Glaister's Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology (1973) the victim used a small calibre revolver to commit suicide. He fired five shots at contact range in an area 3 inches in diameter over the third and fourth intercostal space 11⁄2 inches from midline.
(1) 4 self-inflicted gun shot wounds: 2 in head and 2 in chest. (2) 2 self-inflicted gun shot wounds in head. Victim's first shot has blown off his jaw or created a severe soft-tissue injury in the neck. He was able to return to his house, reload, and return to the barn where he completed the act by shooting the
gun into his head.
