the desk and it is not possible to be certain whether it was
at the same angle as when the date was written. It is
possible, but I consider that many people would have
pushed the document further onto the desk if they wished to
write whilst standing. 1 noted from the photograph that
the chair was against the desk and again I cannot say
that the envelope was written on that desk or even at the
time stated. 1 can confirm that the time written on the
envelope reads 06.10, although it can be read quickly as
0640.
It appeared, from the statements, that the signature on the
alleged suicide note was assumed to read 'J.M.'. From my
examination and comparison I can state that it reads 'John'.

I tested the ink used and compared the bulk of the
handwriting with the date and underscore by use of
infrared luminescence and
Unfortunately the infrared test will determine only
differences with certainty and does not guarantee from a
similar response that the same pen was used; it could also
be one of the same or possibly some other make.
I did not find any mention of envelopes or notepaper in the
list of possessions taken from the apartment.
I cannot say
whether the alleged suicide note was or was not written in
the apartment.
There was one further possibility of authorship of the
alleged suicide note; that Inspector Maclennan wrote under
duress. There are various types of pressure that can be
