The Escape from China

機密

(a) In early 1981 Source Two heard rumours that Macau was accepting

Vietnamese Chinese and, as many residents of Yangcun Farm had travelled to Dawang (1129/2489) OCF to embark on small boats for Macau and were presumed to have arrived safely, as they had not been repatriated, he decided to try to reach Macau himself. Accordingly, he and six friends left Yangcun Farm on 19th April and arrived at Dawang OCF on 23rd April.

(b) A relative of one of the group was living in the Fenggang (7364/

1151) area of Dawang OCF and offered to buy for them, and for six other Vietnamese Chinese who were lodging nearby and wished to travel to Macau, a rowing sampan at a charge of RMB 90 per person.

(c) This was agreed, and on 24th April the group, now 13, walked for about an hour to the river at the Beiwei (0554/0953) area, where a rowing sampan awaited, provisioned with 15 kilos of rice, firewood, fresh water, cooking implements, and a sketch map. The purchase price was handed over to the relative, and the group pushed off

downstream.

(d) Seven days later, on 1st May 1981, when the group was about four

km from Macau, their boat was stopped by a Chinese militia launch. The militia towed the rowing boat to a base (no details), where they searched it and asked if any of the passengers were Chinese nationals or from other countries such as Thailand. Upon being satisfied that the group consisted solely of Vietnamese Chinese, the militia allowed them to proceed.

6.

Source Two said that it was common knowledge in Yangcun that Dawang CF residents were willing to sell boats and provide sketch maps of the route to Macau. Many persons from Source's Farm were preparing to leave. for Macau via Dawang OCF, the latter locale being overcrowded with Vietnamese Chinese from various provinces who were seeking passages to Macau.
