SPEAKING NOTE

DSR 11C

COMMITMENT TO HONG KONG

1.

When my Right Honourable Friend introduced this Bill

on 28 January, he said that we were aware of the strength

of feeling in Hong Kong on the need to maintain the ties

between that territory and the United Kingdom. He also

stressed that the proposed legislation was in no way

intended to weaken those links to which we attach great

importance. Nothing has happened since then which in any

way changes our view of this relationship.

HMG is committed

to continue fulfilling its responsibilities to Hong Kong

and its people.
