We spoke. As I explained, Lord Limerick is visiting the "Pret à Porter" and "Première Vision" trade fairs in Paris on 6 and 7 April. The primary aim of this visit is to give UK and Hong Kong manufacturers in the clothing industry represented at these exhibitions an opportunity to meet. Sir Y K Kan, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will be present and, in fact, will be a guest of Lord Limerick for dinner on 6 April. John Browne, Chairman of our Hong Kong Trade Advisory Group, will also be present.

Mr Browne informs me that Sir Y K Kan can be counted on to raise the highly contentious subject of the British Nationality Bill and how it is purported to affect Hong Kong, especially after the lease expires. I would be grateful therefore if you could provide the necessary defensive briefing for Lord Limerick. Given the nature of the subject, I am copying this minute to the Hong Kong and General Department at the FCO, and the Nationality Bill Unit at the Home Office from whom you may wish to ask for contributions as appropriate. I would be grateful for a return no later than 5 pm Friday 3 April.

Mrs Gingell is providing briefing on other topics.
