BBC RELAY STATION: HONG KONG

1. During his conversation with the Governor of Hong Kong, Mr Ridley asked me to find out the likely capital cost of the buildings and equipment of a relay station and also possible land costs.

The cost of such a station on the preferred site at Tsang Tsui was estimated in October 1980 to be about $6.1 million but will have escalated a couple of hundred thousand pounds or so since then. This estimate does not include any land costs. We do not know what the Hong Kong Government would charge for the land although the BBC have said that the resumption costs ie compulsory purchase by the Hong Kong Government from existing leaseholders, would be about £435,000. We shall in due course have to consult the Hong Kong Government about this and Information Department will be submitting to the Secretary of State with a draft letter to the Governor.
