The Chief Executive of the South Wales Area of the National Union of Mineworkers stressed his belief that the mining industry in South Wales and Britain as a whole, was as competitive as any in the world and was frustrated when they had to compete against the German, French and Belgian coal industries who were subsidised up to £30 per ton (in the case of the Germans) on exported coal. Chief Executive claimed that with the best coking coal in the world they were not sending any to Port Talbot steelworks a stones throw from the mines. Heavily subsidised foreign coal was keeping foreign miners employed, whilst Welsh miners faced pit closures. The Chief Executive gave BY a history book of miners Trade Unionism in South Wales.

Mr Wong attended a Welsh Medieval Banquet in Cardiff Castle and claimed it was his best evening so far in Britain where he has been very lonely, this loneliness being accentuated by the fact that his wife has recently given birth to a daughter in Hong Kong. His knowledge of Western music must be extensive, as he joined in the singing in Cardiff Castle and hummed the odd Neapolitan song.

Mr Wong seems to enjoy working and living in Hong Kong but added that he may well end up working in London.

He visited the Brecon Beacons National Park, Caerphilly Castle and the United World College of the Atlantic.
