REPORT ON THE CNAA VISIT TO BAPTIST COLLEGE ON 7th, 8th and

13th JANUARY, 1981

INTRODUCTION

Members of the CNAA visiting party visited Baptist College in order to assess whether its Diploma courses structured on the new 2+2+1 basis were comparable in standard with courses in the Polytechnic. Having visited the Polytechnic they became aware that the courses presented by the Baptist College were not identical with those in the Polytechnic nor did they have identical objectives. Nevertheless, they felt that they would be able to come to a judgement about the level of student attainment based upon the level of students entering the course and upon the quality of the staff and resources available to meet students' educational needs. therefore engaged upon a full programme of discussion in the Departments of Business Management, Accounting, Economics and Secretarial Management.

Members initially met the senior staff of the Faculty of Business who described the way in which the four departments related to each other. A few courses, namely, Principles of Accounting, Principles of Economics and Organisation and Management, were either prerequisites of the first year or first year requirements for all students in the Faculty. The major programmes were, however, taught entirely by the staff in the four separate departments. The total staff of the Faculty numbers 25 and there are in addition six part-time staff in the Department of Accounting. commented that the staff base looked quite small to deal with the range of specialisations being proposed by the College and a good deal of their questioning in the individual departments was based on this particular
