UNIVERSITY AND POLYTECHNIC GRANTS COMMITTEE

Ref. UPGC/GEN/100/79 II

Appendix B

29 September 1980

Dear Chief Secretary,

Validation of Polytechnic Degrees

On 17 March 1980 I sought your agreement in principle to our proposed procedures for the validation of degrees at the Polytechnic, and to the draft agreement with the United Kingdom Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). Your agreement in principle was contained in your letter of 18 April, subject to the provision of the necessary funds by the Legislature.

2.

As a result of detailed enquiries and discussion at the March 1980 visitation the Committee agreed that the Poly- technic might, if it so wished, submit four degree proposals to CNAA for possible implementation during the triennium 1981-84. These were spelled out in the address made by the Chairman UPGC to the Polytechnic Council on 23 May 1980. In addition the Committee said that it would be prepared to consider submissions for two Engineering degrees (and just possibly a Business Studies degree incorporating textiles marketing) which might, subject to the Committee's approval, also be submitted to CNAA for imple- mentation in 1981-84. Other degree proposals might, subject to Committee approval, be submitted to CNAA during the next year or two, but none of these could actually start until the triennium 1984-87, although some might begin very early in that triennium.
