There is one further major area which affects all three institutions in different forms. This is the development of medical and dental education in Hong Kong in response to the needs of a rapidly expanding and hard pressed service area. During the 1978-81 triennium both Universities and the Polytechnic have been involved with major medical and dental developments, and the Medical Sub-Committee has been kept busy. This situation will continue in the 1981-84 triennium.

The Committee is pleased that the establishment of the Dental School at HKU, and the construction and commissioning of the associated dental hospital, have proceeded reasonably satisfactorily. Such slippages as there have been did not prevent the first entry of 76 dental students in October 1980, though the fact that there is a contingency plan against the possibility that the Hospital may be incomplete by mid-November

recognises how many difficulties have been involved in the project, completely new to Hong Kong, and expresses its appreciation to the Dean and all his staff for their energetic 10 efforts to keep the timetable. It is also grateful to Govern ment for establishing a Statutory Body to administer the Dental Hospital, under the Chairmanship of the Honourable Miss Lydia Dunn. The successful dovetailing of the training course for dental technicians at the Poltyechnic with the dental course at HKU reflects commendable collaboration between the two institutions. The Committee hopes that the feasibility study of the use of a computer to monitor dental patients' treatments in parallel with students' experience will go forward quickly and successfully so that the appropriate facilities can be selected and brought into action in the early future. The Committee believes that the whole Dental School development in terms of the education and training of dental practitioners and their supporting staff will attract worldwide recognition.
