the old CL 1904S at the Polytechnic. The last named computer will finally go out of service about the end of 1981, and a proposal has now been received for its replacement by a medium
sized mainframe to be installed at HKU.

After examining the needs of each institution and the probable costs of alternative means of providing appropriate. computing power in the coming triennium we support the replacement proposal, and have included an appropriate sum to be applied to purchase a suitable machine. The position will then be that the needs of CUHK will be satisfied mainly by the IBM 3031 which they have on lease presently, but propose to purchase; HKU will use the new mainframe; and the Polytechnic has a number of powerful minicomputers which are suitable to its rather special needs. All three institutions will have access subject to certain technical limitations to each others' facilities through the
network.

The role of the UPCC Ltd. in the future is likely to be one which involves principally service functions, namely the maintenance of equipment at the three institutions, the servicing of the network, and the provision of a common system for acquiring supplies. Accordingly we have suggested to the institutions that less formal arrangements would suffice. our recommendations on recurrent grants we have included provision for basic activities including the provision of staff, but we have not specifically indicated sums for the U.P.C.C. Ltd. thus leaving the three institutions free to vary the arrangements as they believe appropriate.
