The major items of recurrent expenditure are incurred in the teaching departments. The departmental teaching costs, usually referred to as the direct costs, cover salaries, wages, and superannuation; departmental and laboratory supplies; equipment; and other minor expenditure. This expenditure is
then expressed as unit costs (that is expenditure per student per year, allowing for teaching done by or for other departments) and is discussed in paragraphs 19 to 23 below. The total direct teaching costs are shown below as a percentage of total expenditure
