Civil Engineering those students admitted without A levels have had very strong 0 level grades and in some cases have had compensating strengths. Staff find the 'O' level students have been deficient in knowledge in some areas but have had the ability to catch up.

16.6 Competition for admission to Polytechnic courses is

intense. In 1979, 778 students applied for the Higher Diploma course and 77 were admitted.

16.7 The wastage rate due to failure and transfer, (apart from the first semester) is low both at Baptist College and at the Polytechnic.

The Government subsidy will at least double in 1981/82 as the second year of the new programme comes into operation. The remainder of the income comes in part from private donations and grants to the College and this in total covers the staff salaries.
