HKBC Factual
The minimum entry requirements are passes at one sitting in two 'A' level subjects one of which must be Pure Mathematics.
HKBC Comment
Some better qualified students who are offered places. on the programme subsequently transfer to other courses at the Hong Kong Universities and the HKP.
Nevertheless, all who remain at HKBC are academically well qualified and highly motivated.
Student Output
HKP Factual
At the minimum level, successful Diploma students have a sound technical education in mathematical sciences and can be compared with students who hold a UK Higher National Diploma in the given subject area. The academic failure rate is negligible and the drop out rate is merely 5% in total.
HKBC Factual
The two year programme of Senior Studies currently offered by the College is strongly academic in nature and the work is similar to that which might be included in some of the years of a UK Degree Programme. It is difficult to equate the level of attainment for whilst the intended depth of study is related to a UK DipHE, it lacks the breadth normally found in such programmes.
HKBC Comment
The three year programme of Senior Studies currently offered is again strongly academic in nature and the depth of treatment of some of the topics is at an intended minimum level related to that of a UK non-honours Degree. The new Honours Diploma level is expected to be similar. Most students completing the two year programme progress to the third year advanced studies.
It is significant that only one half of those students entering the programme of Senior Studies complete that programme. The reason for this appears to be that a significant number of students dislike the level of abstraction demanded in the mathematics courses and also the pace at which these courses are sustained. is not surprising that those who survive on the course are both able and highly motivated towards abstract mathematics.
