I submit a draft reply to the PQ put down by Dr Edmund Marshall MP
(Labour-Goole) for written reply on 31 July. Dr Marshall regularly asks
how many Vietnamese Refugees are still in Hong Kong. The present
PQ follows the figures of 19,093 and 19,339 given on 15 April and
23 July respectively.
2. The increase between these dates is due to a rise of 1,669 (from
2,491 to 4,160) in the number of Vietnamese Refugees who had previously
been resettled in China but then entered Hong Kong illegally. These
people are not treated in the same way as those arriving directly from
Vietnam. They are held in detention in Hong Kong while steps are taken
to return them to China. The number of Refugees who arrived directly
from Vietnam and are awaiting resettlement decreased from 16,602 to
15,179 between the two dates.
