Dr Edmund Marshall (Gocle): To ask the Lord Privy Seal, why the number of Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong has increased by 246 between 15 April and 23 July; and whether he will make a statement on the present position there.

Between 15 April and 23 July, there was an increase of 1,669 in the

number of Vietnamese refugees who had previously been resettled in the

People's Republic of China and who are to be returned to China. The

number of refugees who came directly from Vietnam decreased by 1,423

during the period.
