Introductory Remarks
(i)
E/CN.4/1503 Annex III
This Annex does not attempt an exhaustive account of global migration in the 1970s with detailed tabulations of population shifts. Such an undertaking would
would be outside the scope of the present Study. The purpose of the overview is principally to indicate the diversity and scale of the phenom- and to show how economic disparities and related factors bring about these flows. It should be noted that despite the existence of a large body of writing on the subject, much of the economic migration of the last decade has taken place clandestinely and even migration movements sanctioned by both interested governments are not always documented. The Annex presents an overview of international migration in some of the main areas of the world as recorded by international organiz- ations such as the ILO and OECD or by private researchers.
N.B. Figures on national populations and gross national product
taken from the 1981 Report of
of the World Bank and relate to the year 1979.
