GLOSSARY

The busy day or planning year selected as the appropriate period for defining a volume of traffic to be used as the basis for determining facility require- ments or noise impact.

Flight Envelopes:

The tubes of airspace, defined by International Civil Aviation Organization documents, within which standard flight procedures can be developed.

Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF):

A descriptor of total noise impact, measured in abstract units, which is a composite of air traffic volumes, aircraft types, flight characteristics, runway utilization, and diurnal patterns of demand on a selected design day.

Operational Busy Hours:

The hours of the design day when the demand for air traffic services is at or near the peak level.

Person Trips:

The number of persons travelling to or from a facility via any mode in a specified time period.

Planning Horizon:

The end date specified as the point in time for which facility requirements are to be determined.

Route Sector:

A segment of a planned route within a system of air routes, usually referring to an origin and destination between which the aircraft operates without stopping.

Standard Busy Rate:

The demand for passenger movements or aircraft operations in the 30th busiest hour of the year.

Vehicle Trips:

The number of vehicles travelling to or from a facility in a specified time period.
