SHARP STREET DEPOT SITE

Introduction

On 8th September 1981 having considered memorandum XCC(81)98, (concerning the petition from Swire Properties Limited regarding the resumption of some of their land at Kornhill for the Mass Transit Railway), Members, inter alia, "expressed the view that there was a public interest

where resumption of land of this importance arose and the Council should be consulted before decisions were taken in future cases of this kind". In accordance with these views the advice of this Council is now sought regarding the proposed creation of easements, under Section 6(1) of the Mass Transit Railway (Land Resumption and Related Provisions) Ordinance, over a portion of the Sharp Street tram depot site.

Background

On 28th July 1981 Members were informed of the progress made in the negotiations with the Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company (KG) (memorandum XCC(81) 88) in connection with the future operation of the tramway service and more particularly the proposed exchange of the Sharp Street depot site for the South Camber site in Canton Road. The relevant paragraph of memorandum XCC(81)88 reads as follows :

"The Secretary for the Environment has commenced negotiations with KWG .... KWG has responded quickly and with apparent enthusiasm to the package approach. On the land side, initially, particular attention is being paid to the Mass Transit Railway Corporation's require- ments for access to part of the Sharp Street depot site for the construction of a tunnel shaft leading to the future Causeway Bay Station.
