7. The Island Line will be constructed by the subterranean 'bored tunnel' technique rather than the 'cut and cover' surface method used previously. This will involve fewer land clearances and less disruption of traffic. It is expected that the construction will mean moving 5,300 people (half of these in the Chai Wan Temporary Housing area). The resettlement of these people will 'be under- taken in accordance with established practices'. The Hong Kong Government expects some adverse reaction but not of the same magnitude as in previous construction work (Para 47).
