Discussion then moved to the concept of management

contracting which Mr Sallabank pointed out had been adopted by

The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation for the re-development

of the Bank's headquarters. Mr Chen seemed uncertain about its

application to the Hong Lung buildings which he described as

relatively straightforward in terms of design and construction.

There was also some inconclusive discussion on the cost saving

advantages of combining the work of tunnelling, station concourses

and above ground development.

The Minister and delegates were grateful to Mr Chen for

sparing the time to come and talk to them. For his part, Mr Chen

invited the British contractors to feel free to approach him and

Mr Yin should they wish to elaborate on proposals they thought

might be of mutual benefit.
