IMPORTS OF TVS FROM FAR EAST

I have discussed with Mr Muir in CRE4 what further action is necessary on the question of imports of TV sets from Hong Kong following the return from the Far East of Mr Atkinson (DOI).

Mr Atkinson's discussions in Hong Kong seem to have gone reasonably well. Mr Muir feels, however, that it is important to get a clear understanding within Whitehall that there should be no revival of proposals for VRAS on Hong Kong manufactured sets. He intends to write to the DOI on these lines, copying to us.

This seems all right so far. We should keep a close eye on the question and I would be grateful if Mr Edgar would keep in touch with his opposite numbers in CRE and DOI. It is important that a firm line emerges for briefing Mr Rees for his visit in December.
