Section 8 Communications & Cargo Handling
External Communications
Hong Kong has one of the finest natural harbours in the world, an international airport and excellent worldwide telephone, telex and cable communications.
Sea Transport
Many shipping companies provide regular sailings from Hong Kong to all parts of the world. Some 10,000 ocean-going ships use the harbour each year, bringing over 20 million tonnes of cargo, and taking about eight million tonnes.
Freight rates for goods exported by sea are fixed mainly by shipping conferences, although non- conference members may on occasions offer more competitive quotations. The rates for some selected items consigned from Hong Kong to Europe or North America are shown in Table 15.
An efficient telecommunication system provides instant links all over the world.
