Section 2
Hong Kong's Manufacturing Industry
A striking feature of our industrial development has been its rapid growth. In the last two decades Hong Kong has been transformed from a trading port into an industrial community, heavily dependent on its export-oriented manufacturing industry.
Existing Industries
Most of our manufacturing industries produce light consumer goods. The textiles and clothing, electron- ics, plastic and toys sectors account for about two-thirds of the manufacturing workforce and of domestic exports. These industries are likely to continue to predominate, but there have been significant developments in others during recent years, and more can be expected. The importance of the major industries are shown in Tables 6 and 10.
