REGISTRY Action Taken

Dear Denak,

SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR UK TRADE IN HONG KONG

1.

23

Thank you for your letter of 15 April about the Secretary of State's offer to speak to the Secretary of State for Trade about opportunities in Hong Kong.

2. On reflection, I too agree that there is little need for direct Ministerial contact on this subject at the moment. Of the three sectors you mention none requires further action by the Secretary of State. The question of consumer electronics has been aired thoroughly in connection with Kenneth Baker's visit and I doubt whether it would be useful to pursue this.

3. The Secretary of State agrees that no further action need be taken by him. Instead, Dick Clift will mention the Secretary of State's views at the next meeting of the Trade Advisory Group on 30 June.
