HONG KONG PROJECTS LIST

MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY (MTR) ISLAND LINE

The Hong Kong Government announced in December 1980 that it had approved the construction of an extension of the MTR along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. The total estimated cost of the project in 1980 prices will be in the region of £585 million.

The Mass Transit Railway Corporation are currently evaluating proposals from property developers for participation in the construction of the MTR stations. UK firms are short-listed for both the line construction contracts and the electrical and mechanical contracts. The main tunnelling contracts are expected to be let towards the end of 1981 and all other contracts will be awarded by July 1982.

CASTLE PEAK A POWER STATION

In 1977, British companies including GEC, Balfour Beatty and others won the major orders worth £350 million for four 350 megawatt generating sets, 6 gas turbines and a transmission system. The project is running according to schedule.

CASTLE PEAK B POWER STATION

It was announced in March 1981 that British companies had negotiated orders worth £550 million for the supply and construction of a 4 by 660 megawatt coal fired power station for China Light and Power Ltd (CLP). GEC will supply the four turbine generators and Babcock Power the boilers. It is hoped that a contract will be signed later this summer once CLP's financing plan has been approved by Hong Kong's Executive Council.

CHEK LAP KOK AIRPORT (estimated total potential value £950 million)

Hong Kong's existing international airport at Kai Tak will become over-saturated by 1990. In 1979 a consultancy study undertaken by a group led by Parsons Overseas (US) and including the UK CAA confirmed the feasibility of constructing and operating a new airport at Chek Lap Kok, north of Lantau Island.

The Parsons group were, in October 1980, awarded the master plan contract to consider the best airport layout, Air Traffic Control system require- ment, cost estimates and development programme. The HS$100 million civil engineering study has also been awarded to Parsons Overseas, this time with the cooperation of the British firm Mott Hay and Anderson.
