DECLARATION OF INTENT

Following an invitation by the China Marine Industry

Corporation (CMIC), a delegation from British Ship-

builders (BS), headed by Mr. Derek B. Kimber, Chair-

man of the large merchant shipyards in BS' Merchant

Shipbuilding Division, visited China from 20 to 28

February 1981. During this tour the delegation visited

the CMIC shipyards in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tianjin,

and also the Ship and Shipping Research and Merchant

Ship Design and Research Institutes in Shanghai con-

trolled by the Ministry of Communications. The delega-

tion was impressed by the achievements of the ship-

building industry in New China. In Beijing they were

received by the Vice-Minister Cheng of the Ministry of

Communications, and had discussions with a team from

CMIC, headed by the Deputy General Manager Mr. Zhang,

on the possibility of active cooperation between the

shipyards controlled by the central authorities in each.

country.
