Guangzhou Institute for the Study of Hong Kong

According to Guangming Ribao on 17 February, the Economics

Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has established a branch

in Guangzhou to study the economic situation in Hong Kong and Macau. The

branch is known as the Hong Kong and Macau Economics Institute and is headed

by 60-year old economist, Gu Nianliang.

Shandong Export Commodities Exhibition

Vice-Governor of Shandong Province, Xu Leijian, visited Hong Kong

to open the Shandong Export Commodities Exhibition on 21 February. The

exhibition, at Star House, will be open until 15 March. It is sponsored by

the Shandong Foreign Trade Corporation.

Oil Matters

Two French oil companies have now confirmed oil strikes in the

Bohai sea to the west of Hainan and the Leizhou peninsula. Total Chine's (see also "Current Hong Kong - China Economic Developments January 1981)

discovery of "significant" quantities of oil was made on 13 February whilst

Elf-Aquitaine's find of "encouraging" deposits was on 19 February. The

companies struck oil at depths of 2,300 metres and 3,200 metres respectively.

The support base for operations in these fields is being built at Zhanjiang

on the Leizhou peninsula.

A seminar on China's off-shore oil exploration programme is to be

held in Shenzhen from 25 to 27 March. It is jointly organised by the Hong Kong

Polytechnic and China's Wah Nam Technical Institute.

Hong Kong Company to operate battery farm and feed-mill in Shenzhen

Under an agreement between Chia Tai Conti Ltd of Hong Kong and the

Guangdong Special Economic Zones Development Co. and the Animal Husbandry

Bureau of Shenzhen, the Hong Kong company has obtained a contract to construct

battery farms for poultry and pigs and a "high technology" feed-mill.

Construction of the farms is already underway and work on the feed-mill will

start shortly. The enterprise is scheduled to begin production later this year, with products being sold locally and exported to Hong Kong and other

Far Eastern markets.
